Morphology Project Overview

The goal of the Morphology Project is to develop an illustrated, interactive on-line glossary of morphological terms, modeled on the Flybase anatomy page.

Although the LepTree project itself will not construct morphological character matrices, the Twig Leader network will strengthen the foundation for such matrices by collaborating to produce this glossary. For some structures, most notably male genitalia, the insularity of research traditions in different groups has led to proliferation of disjunct or even contradictory terminologies and homology assignments.

For these structures, experts on different superfamilies will initially construct separate glossaries, to be merged subsequently in a face-to-face “homology jamboree” similar to the annotation jamborees that genomics researchers hold. LepTree is sponsoring a series of workshops and symposia on this topic.
